PhD-Project:
“Re-negotiating religious and secular identities in an emerging diaspora”
Her doctoral dissertation focuses on the construction of (religious) identity in the context of migration processes. She particularly looks at the influence of societal constructions and representations in correspondence with subjective negotiations of cultural and religious affiliation and belonging.
Profile:
Vanessa Rau is a PhD Candidate University of Cambridge and holds a Bachelor's degree in Social and Political Science from the University of Cambridge and a joint Master's degree in Social Science and International Relations from Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and University of Potsdam. Her fields of interest and research focus lie in the field of religion and politics, secularism and secularity as well as (inter)national responses to multiculturalism, religious diversity and subjectivity.
Throughout her studies, Vanessa has worked on the philosophy of multiculturalism, and relations between state and religious communities as well as (post-structural) approaches to religion and secularism, predominantly in Europe, Latin America and Israel. She is dedicated to qualitative social research and ethnography and is especially interested in cultural sociology and Psychoanalysis in the humanities.
