Welcome to the Digital Intensive Course: Religion and Development

About us

For the first time the Research Programme on Religious Communities and Sustainable Development organises and hosts an international intensive course on Religion and Development for students from African and German universities. In this exciting intensive course, MA students and PhD candidates from six different countries will be teamed up virtually to explore empirical research methods in theory and practice. The course investigates the relations of religion with decolonial development, ecology, politics, gender equality and peace through high-profile lectures and conveys vital academic methods and soft skills, e.g. participatory observation, research ethics, grant application writing, academic networking etc. The ambitious course supports aspiring young academics to pursue their individual interests in the field of religion and development and connects international students and researchers in a virtual setting.

It is substantially funded by the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD and supported by the International Office of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Originally planned as a two-week course at the University of the Western Cape, we are now looking forward to vital discussions in the online space with a diverse group of students and in close collaboration with lecturers from the University of the Western Cape, University of Pretoria, Freie Universität Berlin and University of Bath. We are commited to catering to the best of our abilities for a successful long-distance learning experience and relationship-building event in times of travel restrictions and global challenges due to COVID-19.
